Nevasa - Passenger Cruise Ship 20527/1956/UK / 5249948 Passing Hythe Pier - 4.9.1971 Don Smith Collection Notes:- Built by Barclay,Curle & Co.Glasgow Launched 30.11.1955 Completed 12.7.1956 Maiden Voyage 27.7.1956 Named after a city in Maharashtra Province in Central India she was launched by Mrs JA Boyd-Carpenter, wife of the then Minister of Transport. She entered service as a troopship on a 15 year charter. In October 1962 she made her last trooping voyage before the transfer of the Armed Forces was made entirely by air and was laid up on the River Fal. In November 1964 she was converted at Falmouth to an educational cruise ship. Her tonnages altered to 20160grt Operated by British India Steam Navigation Company 1955 to 1972 then by P & O 1972 to 1975 Her first educational cruise departed from Southampton on October 28th 1965. On January 11th 1975 on arrival at Malta she was unexpectedly withdrawn due to increased operating costs particularly fuel and was sold to the Nan Feng Company - Kaohsiung for scrapping
